Type 430 (UNS S43000) is a 17% chromium ferritic stainless steel with no deliberate nickel addition, so its price is lower and more stable than 304. It offers good corrosion resistance in dry indoor environments and is widely used for appliance panels, kitchen counters and decorative trim.

Fabrication & Heat Treatment

WeldingControl heat input, interpass temperature and joint design to limit grain growth and loss of toughness; stabilized grades improve but do not remove these controls.
FormingFormability is useful in sheet gauges but lower than common austenitic grades, especially in heavy sections and severe draws.
MachiningMachining is generally straightforward with rigid tooling; avoid smearing, overheating and iron contamination of finished surfaces.
Heat treatmentFerritic grades are not hardened by heat treatment. Annealing can restore ductility, but the temperature and cooling route must follow the product specification.

Is 430 stainless steel magnetic?

Yes — 430 is ferritic, so it is strongly magnetic in every condition. This is why magnets stick to many appliance fronts made of 430 BA finish.

430 vs 304 — when is 430 good enough?

Indoors and in dry or occasionally damp service — appliance panels, trim, counters — 430 performs well at a lower, nickel-independent price. For outdoor exposure, frequent wet cleaning with chlorides, or welded structural parts, 304 is the better choice.

Can 430 be welded?

Yes, but with care: the heat-affected zone grain-coarsens and loses toughness. Thin gauges spot-weld and TIG-weld fine for trim work; heavy welded fabrication is better served by austenitic grades or stabilized ferritics like 439/441.
