Type 202 (UNS S20200) is a chromium-manganese austenitic stainless steel in which manganese and nitrogen replace part of the nickel of 304. It costs less and work-hardens quickly, offering moderate corrosion resistance suited to indoor, dry and mildly corrosive service such as cookware, appliances and trim.

Corrosion Resistance & Limits
- General corrosion resistance comes from the chromium-rich passive film; nickel, molybdenum, nitrogen and copper change performance by grade.
- Check chlorides, temperature, crevices, deposits, process chemistry and cleaning conditions. A grade designation alone is not a service-life guarantee.
Fabrication & Heat Treatment

What is the difference between 202 and 304 stainless steel?
202 replaces part of the nickel of 304 with manganese and nitrogen, so it is cheaper but has lower corrosion resistance — roughly 17–19% chromium with only 4–6% nickel. For indoor and dry applications the difference is rarely visible; outdoors or near the coast 304 lasts significantly longer.
Is 202 stainless steel rust proof?
It resists rust in dry indoor environments and with normal cleaning. In humid, coastal or polluted atmospheres it can develop surface staining faster than 304. If the part will see weather or chlorides, specify 304 or better.
Is 202 stainless steel food safe?
Yes for typical cookware and utensil service. 202 is widely used for bowls, pans and utensils. It cleans well and does not leach in normal cooking conditions; its main limitation is long-term staining in aggressive dishwashing or salty environments rather than food safety.
