Stainless Steel Pipe and Tube

Compare seamless, welded, sanitary and mechanical stainless tube by standard, size system, wall, end, service and inspection plan for China export RFQs.

Pipe and tube orders must identify the size convention, production route, service standard, ends and examination rather than relying on diameter alone. In pressure piping, NPS and schedule commonly work with a dimensional standard; instrumentation, sanitary, heat-exchanger and mechanical tube are more often described by exact outside diameter and wall thickness. Do not convert between these systems casually. Name the product standard and dimensional basis so tolerances, heat treatment, length and test requirements can be evaluated under the correct document.

Seamless and welded are manufacturing routes, not complete quality grades. The application, purchased standard and inspection plan determine whether either route is acceptable. Welded pressure pipe, sanitary tube and decorative hollow section also have different weld, heat-treatment and surface requirements. For heat exchangers, the buyer may need tube length, straightness, ovality, wall tolerance and end condition tied to fabrication. For sanitary service, freeze ASTM A270 (or the project hygienic specification) separately from general-service A269 — connection geometry, internal finish or roughness, cleaning and protected ends need explicit acceptance language. Use the site ASTM A270 vs A269 sanitary tubing guide, pipe vs tube ordering guide and seamless vs welded A312 guide when writing the freeze lines.

Define ends before pricing any additional processing. Plain ends, ASME-style bevels, threads, grooves and sanitary connections require different dimensional checks and protection. If the tube will be bent, welded into a spool or cut to exact length, attach the relevant drawing and state whether post-processing heat treatment, pickling, passivation or finish restoration is required. Internal and external finish should be named separately where fluid cleanliness, weld accessibility or visible appearance matters; a general request for “polished pipe” does not establish an internal roughness criterion.

For Middle East and Southeast Asia export programs, send destination port, Incoterms preference, bundle length limits, end-cap and separator requirements, and climate packing notes with the RFQ. We quote supported bundles for long thin-wall tube, end caps for bevels and sanitary ends, and the packing method for the sea route. Name hydrostatic, eddy-current, ultrasonic, weld examination or PMI with report and witness points, and freeze certificate wording with the purchase-order wording examples and RFQ checklist. Contact sales through the contact / RFQ page once the size system, standard family and destination are clear.

What to send for a quotation

  • Does the order use NPS and schedule or outside diameter and wall thickness?
  • Is the production route seamless, welded, sanitary, mechanical or structural?
  • Which product, dimensional and service standards govern acceptance (A312, A269, A270, A554)?
  • What end preparation, examination, PMI and pressure test are required?
  • What destination port, packing method and document package apply for MENA or SEA delivery?

Product form matrix

Choose the product form first. We quote the matching purchase standard and dimensional description for that form.

How to choose

  • Choose seamless or welded production from the purchased standard, service and examination plan.
  • Separate pressure pipe, sanitary tube (A270), general-service tube (A269), heat-exchanger tube and decorative hollow section requirements.
  • Match grade, heat treatment and surface condition to the corrosion and fabrication environment.
  • Send end preparation, connection system, destination port and dimensional standard with the RFQ.

Dimensions and tolerances

Pipe commonly uses NPS and schedule while tube is ordered by outside diameter and wall thickness; tolerances, length, ovality, straightness and ends depend on the governing standard. Do not convert between pipe and tube systems casually on a single line item.

Send the ordered sizes and any tighter project tolerances. We quote the matching pipe & tube route against the governing dimensional system.

Processing and finishing

  • State whether cutting, bending, welding or fabrication is included and define the acceptable heat treatment, weld condition and dimensional checks after processing.
  • Connect pickled, passivated, mechanically polished or electropolished surfaces to service, internal cleanliness and an agreed roughness or visual acceptance method.
  • Specify plain, beveled, threaded, grooved or sanitary ends with protection suitable for the connection and the next site operation.

Inspection and documents

  • Confirm OD or NPS, wall or schedule, length, ovality, straightness and end dimensions.
  • State hydrostatic, eddy-current, ultrasonic or weld examination required by the order.
  • Define internal surface or roughness acceptance for sanitary and high-purity service.
  • Name PMI hold points when mixed grades or dual-cert lots must be verified at receiving.

Packing and handling risks

RISK 01

Tube ends and machined bevels can be damaged or contaminated without caps and separation.

RISK 02

Long thin-wall tubes can bend or ovalize when bundles lack suitable support for sea routes to MENA or SEA ports.

RISK 03

Polished internal or external surfaces require clean handling and moisture control through tropical and Gulf climates.

Frequently asked questions

Should an RFQ use pipe schedule or wall thickness?

Use the size system required by the dimensional standard and include both nominal size and schedule or exact OD and wall when needed. Do not convert casually between NPS/schedule and OD×wall on one line.

Does seamless pipe automatically have better acceptance criteria?

No. Suitability depends on the product standard, service, dimensions, heat treatment and ordered examination rather than production route alone.

What extra information is needed for sanitary tube (ASTM A270)?

Include the sanitary standard (A270 vs general-service A269), OD and wall, internal finish or maximum Ra, weld condition, cleaning, end connection and protection method. See the site ASTM A270 vs A269 buyer guide before freezing the line.

When must end preparation be defined?

Send plain, beveled, threaded, grooved or sanitary ends with the RFQ because the end geometry affects processing, inspection and packing protection.

What should MENA and SEA pipe/tube RFQs include beyond size and grade?

Add destination port, Incoterms, bundle support for long thin-wall lengths, end-cap protection, moisture control, heat marking, MTC / EN 10204 type and any PMI hold points so quotes stay comparable across Gulf and Southeast Asia delivery routes.
