Grade equivalence questions

Can equivalent stainless steel grades be substituted automatically?

No. A cross-reference indicates a commonly used or compositionally similar designation, not automatic interchangeability. Confirm chemistry, mechanical properties, product standard, condition, dimensions, testing and project approval before substitution.

Is EN 1.4301 the same as 304 stainless steel?

EN 1.4301 and Type 304 are commonly cross-referenced, but their governing standards, permitted product forms and property requirements are not identical in every case. The purchase order must name the controlling product standard and edition.

Why can one stainless grade have several international designations?

AISI/ASTM type names, UNS numbers, EN material numbers and names, JIS designations and GB designations come from different standard systems. Similar chemistry does not remove differences in scope, condition, dimensions or acceptance criteria.
