EN 10088: European Stainless Steel Product Standards
Use EN 10088 as a series, not as a single generic stainless specification. The purchase line must identify the applicable part, steel name and material number, product form, delivery condition, dimensions, tolerance standard, surface, testing, inspection document, and project additions. A familiar AISI or ASTM trade grade may help start a comparison, but it does not replace the EN designation or prove equivalence. Construction, pressure, regulated, or project-controlled work may invoke additional harmonized product, execution, design, or approval requirements. Freeze those responsibilities before requesting a quotation.

What this material standard controls
Designation and grade framework
The EN 10088 series provides stainless steel names, material numbers, composition frameworks, and relevant product requirements. Buyers should order by the EN designation used by the contract rather than by a loose international nickname.
Product-specific parts
Different parts address different product and use contexts, including flat and long products and construction-related delivery. The inquiry must name the part that governs the ordered form and application.
Delivery condition and properties
Properties depend on product form, thickness or section, and delivery condition. The line item must state the condition and coordinate dimensions, tolerances, surface, tests, and inspection documentation with the applicable product route.
What it does not control alone
- Writing EN 10088 without a part does not define one product specification, delivery condition, thickness range, tolerance, surface, test plan, or inspection document.
- The series does not by itself complete pressure-equipment, structural-execution, welding, corrosion-selection, fire, food-contact, or project approval requirements.
- An EN material number is not an unconditional substitute for an ASTM, JIS, GB/T, or trade grade; product form, chemistry, properties, condition, tests, dimensions, and approval must be compared.

Which EN 10088 part should a buyer specify?
Choose the part that covers the ordered product form and use context, then name it explicitly with the steel designation, delivery condition, dimensional standard, tests, and inspection document. A generic EN 10088 reference is incomplete.
Is an EN 10088 grade equivalent to the same-number AISI grade?
A cross-reference can support screening, but it is not unconditional equivalence. Compare formal chemistry, product form, delivery condition, mechanical requirements, dimensions, tests, certification, and project approval before substitution.
Does EN 10088 define the inspection certificate?
The purchase order should state the required EN 10204 inspection-document type and the product-standard test results, traceability, witness, language, and validation requirements. The document designation alone does not add unstated tests.
