Machining stock, specified properly
For CNC shops the useful spec is diameter tolerance and straightness, not just grade: bright drawn bar to h9 runs directly in bar feeders; h11 suits general turning; peeled bar removes surface defects on larger diameters. State your tolerance class and we quote accordingly.
Free-machining alternative
High-volume turned parts may justify 303 (sulfur-added free-machining grade) instead of 304. When the project specification permits either grade, request alternative quotations and compare machining benefit against 303’s lower corrosion resistance and weldability.
