A targeted corrosion grade
904L contains higher nickel, molybdenum and copper than 316L. The premium is justified in specific reducing-acid or chloride conditions, not as a universal upgrade. Process concentration, contaminants and temperature should be reviewed by the project materials engineer.
What to send for quotation
Provide the governing material standard, thickness and width, cut drawings, inspection document, supplementary corrosion or ultrasonic tests, surface condition and packing. Availability depends strongly on plate thickness and source mill.
Welding and substitution
Use a qualified procedure and compatible over-alloyed consumables. A grade described as equivalent must still be checked for chemistry, mechanical properties, product standard, heat treatment and project approval.
