316L Stainless Steel Butt-Weld Fittings

316L butt-weld fittings are quoted by type, ASTM A403 grade, ASME B16.9 or MSS SP-43, NPS and schedule to match the connected pipe. Send every end size for reducers and tees; we quote the piping class in one file.
Supply routes
- Qualified partner-mill sourcing
- Stock coordination
Where this product solves the job
- 316L process lines where the pipe class, corrosion environment and welded connection design are already defined.
- Elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends that must align with ASME B16.9 or MSS SP-43 dimensions.
- Projects that need a controlled heat, weld, marking and inspection record linked to the fitting lot.
When we recommend another route
- Hygienic clamp or ferrule connections whose gasket and internal finish belong to a sanitary system.
- A fitting order that omits NPS, schedule, angle, branch geometry or end bevel and expects the supplier to infer them.
- Automatic substitution between seamless and welded routes, fitting classes or standards without engineering approval.
Standards we quote against
Send the product standard, edition and any dimensional or finish standard with the RFQ. We quote the ordered combination, not a generic grade name.
Ordered product standards: ASTM A403/A403M · ASME B16.9 · MSS SP-43
What to send so we can quote the right route
- State WP316L or the approved material grade, ASTM A403 edition, fitting class and any project supplementary requirements.
- Identify elbow angle and radius, tee branch, reducer orientation, cap or stub-end type, NPS and schedule for every line item.
- Define ASME B16.9, MSS SP-43 or another dimensional basis, end bevel, wall tolerance and face-to-face or center-to-end limits.
- Confirm seamless or welded route, heat treatment, repair-weld acceptance, NDE, PMI, marking and heat traceability requirements.
- List quantity by item, drawing revision, inspection document, packing, destination and requested delivery window.

Published ranges are technical references, not a live-stock or production-capability promise. We confirm the ordered size range, MOQ and delivery schedule in the quotation.
Edge or end condition
- Butt-weld bevel to standard or project detail; final condition as ordered.
Testing and inspection
- Tests required by the purchased product standard.
- PMI, NDE, corrosion, roughness or other supplementary inspection quoted when the RFQ names method, lot scope and acceptance.
Order documents
- Heat identity with EN 10204 3.1, or the inspection document named in the RFQ, against mill, stock or partner-mill route.
- Supplementary reports linked to the ordered test plan.
Export packaging
- Bevels, threads or sanitary faces capped and segregated by type, size and heat.
- Case packing used when mixing risk or finish protection requires it; packing method stated in the quotation.
Quote the complete piping class
Send fitting grade, schedule, end preparation and dimensional standard with the pipe and design code. ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43 are quoted as separate routes. We check the quotation against the line list, NPS, wall and fitting standard.
Quote geometry before price
Send elbow angle and radius, tee run and branch, reducer orientation and face-to-face length, and cap or stub-end wall. Include bevel, out-of-roundness, wall tolerance and drawing revision; we quote fit-up against that requisition.
Quote manufacturing and inspection
Send ASTM A403 class, any seamless restriction, heat treatment, NDE, PMI, repair-weld acceptance or witness points with the RFQ. We keep heat and lot identity linked to each fitting through packing.
Common ordering mistakes
- Mixing a fitting schedule with a pipe wall that belongs to a different piping class or corrosion allowance.
- Treating MSS SP-43 and ASME B16.9 as interchangeable when their size range and dimensional coverage differ.
- Ordering a reducer without naming concentric or eccentric orientation, small-end size and the required face-to-face length.
- Assuming a material certificate covers NDE, PMI, weld records or third-party witness points that were never ordered.
Handling and transport risks
- Unprotected bevels can be dented or contaminated, which may change fit-up and require preparation before welding.
- Thin-wall fittings can distort during handling, tack welding or heat input outside the approved weld procedure.
- Mixed heat and fitting-class identification can break traceability when loose pieces are moved between fabrication lots.
- Carbon-steel contact, wet packing or salt exposure can stain stainless surfaces before installation.

Finishes and processing
What to Include in Your RFQ
Send the known values first. We use them to quote the ordered option, inspection plan and delivery route.

Product RFQ Example
RFQ example: ASTM A403 WP316L-S butt-weld 90-degree long-radius elbows, ASME B16.9, NPS 6, Schedule 40S, ten pieces, seamless route if required by the piping class, bevel dimensions per standard, PMI and NDE only as listed in the requisition, heat-linked inspection document, capped bevels, export case packing and destination port; we quote the matching route and delivery window.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43 change a butt-weld fitting order?
They are different dimensional references with different application and size coverage. Name the required standard on each item and check that the selected fitting matches the pipe class, wall and fabrication drawing.
What does WP316L-S mean on a fitting requisition?
It identifies a material and class basis under ASTM A403; the exact edition, manufacturing route, heat treatment and supplementary requirements still belong in the purchase specification. Do not reduce the order to the alloy name alone.
Should a 316L elbow be seamless or welded?
The piping class, design code, size, wall, corrosion service and approved fabrication basis decide the route. Send any seamless restriction or welded acceptance and the NDE or repair-weld requirements; we quote that route.
Which dimensions must be stated for a reducing tee?
State run NPS and schedule, branch NPS and schedule, center-to-end dimensions, wall tolerance, bevel and orientation. A generic reducer or tee description leaves the fit-up geometry unresolved.
Which inspection records can be requested for butt-weld fittings?
Request the document type, heat and lot linkage, dimensional report, PMI, NDE, hardness, corrosion or third-party witness points only when they are part of the accepted inspection plan. The final package is confirmed in the quotation.
