Quote the connection family first
Sanitary fittings are quoted by the plant’s approved system. ASME BPE, DIN 11850 and ISO 2037 can use different tube outside diameters, wall conventions, ferrule profiles and gasket seats. Send the connection standard with the tube and gasket specification.
Quote the product-contact surface
Send internal Ra, polishing or electropolishing route, weld treatment and cleaning. We quote the exact surface limit and report format against the ordered drawing.
Quote hygienic assembly separately from pressure design
Ferrules and clamps are quoted for a hygienic connection; butt-weld fittings and flanges for other piping and pressure-design needs. Send grade, wall, temperature, pressure, cleaning media and weld procedure. 304L is often quoted for neutral utility or food routes; 316L for chloride or acidic exposure.
Common ordering mistakes
- Mixing ASME BPE, DIN 11850 and ISO 2037 tube dimensions because the nominal size looks similar.
- Treating a ferrule, clamp and union as interchangeable without checking gasket seat, profile and cleaning access.
- Calling a polished surface "sanitary" without defining roughness, weld blending, cleaning and protective packaging.
- Omitting reducer orientation, tee branch geometry or elbow centerline when the fitting must match a skid drawing.
Handling and transport risks
- Open ends can collect dirt or suffer dents, so caps, clean separators and controlled unpacking should be specified.
- Contact with carbon-steel tools or dirty racks can introduce contamination that is not visible in a quick visual check.
- Thin-wall fittings can distort during welding or clamping when purge, alignment and heat input are outside the approved procedure.
- Mixed gasket and ferrule lots can create a connection that assembles but does not meet the validated cleaning boundary.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose between ASME BPE, DIN 11850 and ISO 2037 sanitary fittings?
Start with the tube outside diameter, wall basis, ferrule or union profile and the plant's approved connection standard. A nominal inch or millimeter size alone does not prove that gaskets, clamps and cleaning geometry will match.
When is 316L preferable to 304L sanitary fittings?
316L can provide additional margin for chloride, acidic product and aggressive cleaning, but the final selection depends on chemistry, temperature, weld condition and the validated cleaning cycle. Do not substitute by grade name alone.
What should an RFQ say about a polished sanitary fitting?
Name the internal and external surface route, maximum Ra or other acceptance limit, weld blending, cleaning, capping and the report required. "Polished" without a method and acceptance basis is not a complete purchase description.
Are hygienic ferrules suitable for pressure-rated process piping?
Ferrules and unions are selected for their hygienic connection system. Pressure piping may instead require a code-rated butt-weld fitting or flange with a different dimensional and inspection basis; the piping class should decide the route.
How should sanitary fittings be packed for export?
Confirm caps, clean separators, surface protection, case or skid format, moisture control and item identification in the order. Packing is selected for the finish, geometry and transport route rather than assumed from the product name.
